The Grendon Underwood Cricket Team is one of the earliest recorded activities in the village. The exact date of it's formation is as yet unknown but the indications are that it was formed around 1850 or earlier. The records show that the games played during the periods it was active, over the past 150 years, were on a friendly basis and they were not involved in any league.

The earliest reports of any games are those detailed in the Bucks Advertiser and Aylesbury News during 1854. The home and away matches were between a combined team of Grendon Underwood and Edgcott against
Quainton. Although both games were in favour of Quainton, the reporter indicated that the combined Grendon team had been unbeaten for several years before these matches. An interesting rider to the home game was that they dined afterwards at the Three Horseshoes (Grange Farm). A more comprehensive picture of the fortunes of the club in their early days could be obtained with a considerable amount of research. |

At the beginning go the 20th century, the team was playing regularly at 'The Lawn', which was the field to the right of the drive leading to Grendon Hall. The club was very active again in the late 1920's and throughout the 1930's, when the first and second elevens were fielded. At this time, the team played under the name of Grendon Ramblers and paid a subscription of 1d per match. In 1942, the club pavilion at The Lawn was dismantled to allow the field to be ploughed and used to grow crops for the war effort. After the war, the venue of the home matches was changed to the centre of the village. |

In the 1950's, the cricket side again played regularly until 1955 when games ceased due to a lack of support. In 1979 after a lapse of 24 years, the club reformed, playing initially under the name of 'The Swan
Taverners'. A celebration of ten seasons of continuous cricket was
celebrated in 1989, when the 'old boys' played the regular team. |
